Nursing Pillow Review: Don't Break Your Back of Your Wallet

If you're planning to breastfeed or currently nursing, I'm sure you’ve checked out the various nursing pillows in the market. Most pillows are a life saver, or at least a back saver, once you find the right one. I've owned four different types, three of which I would recommend to a friend.

First off, we'll start with the bad. I grabbed a no name nursing pillow at a consignment sale. It came in the same half-circle shape as other nursing pillows, but was pure fluff with no support. I threw it in the back of my car for infrequent car nursing sessions, and eventually dropped it off at goodwill. Don't waste your time and money on no names pillows, because they leave you with no support!

The Boppy nursing pillow, My Breast Friend, and Ergo nursing pillow are far more worth your time and money.

When my oldest was born, the Boppy was just hitting the market and was at the top of everyone’s registries. I like the Boppy because it's versatile. I used it to nurse and to help support my son as we was learning to sit up on his own (with supervision!). You can purchase various washable covers for the Boppy, and believe me; you'll want a back-up. Between breast milk and spaghetti sauce, these covers end up baring quite a lot!

The one con to the Boppy for me was that it could be cumbersome to position properly and comfortably. I'd often put a pillow under the Boppy to boost it up to the height I needed to nurse comfortably, and end up feeling a bit like the princess and the pea.

When My Breast Friend came out shortly before my second child was born, I decided to give it a go. It truly became my breast friend.

Unlike the Boppy, this pillow is foam which is great for supporting your little one and it has Velcro straps that wrap around your back to help you achieve the right height ditch the extra pillow and princess pea vibe. I have the deluxe model, which has a convenient pouch to store cloths and breast pads and even a water bottle holder to keep you hydrated while nursing. They really thought of it all! You can also purchase extra covers to keep your Breast Friend clean!

Finally, I came across the ergo nursing pillow at the end of my third pregnancy. I scored a great deal and decided to try it out. Unlike the other two, this pillow is made or organic material. The design is quiet proprietary and offers a sleek look that's comfortable for moms and babies. It's the most firm pillow of the three, yet for me, the shape and firmness meant my baby outgrew the pillow in about 4 months. My little one was too large to lay comfortably in shape of the pillow. Nevertheless, this pillow was a gem in the early days and if organic is high on your checklist, you’ve found your perfect pillow! Ok, that pun might be copy right infringement... but I love my perfect pillow!

Which nursing pillows have you used? How would you rate it?
